Big Data in Health Sciences: Overview of the current situation and challenges
“Data Science” is the new kid-in-the-block of science. A belief is quickly spreading that we will be able to solve all our problems if we were just able to analyse enough quantities of data with the right methods… And now, thanks to the digital technology, we can generate and collect enormous amounts of data continuously and ubiquitously, the “Big Data”. This big data poses equally enormous analytical challenges but some people believe that we have a wonder-tool called “machine learning” that can handle and analyse all this data with minimum human interaction, apparently providing all the answers to all the questions. This talk will give a brief introduction of what Big Data is in health sciences now day, what are the limitations that we face and the new opportunities that we need to explore. I will explain that the machine learning is not going to solve our problems automatically with little human intervention. Far from that, we are going to need a lot more human thinking and imagination and coordination between different kinds of scientists if we want to harness the power of Big Data.
