Industrial PhD Mention

Resolution of the International Doctoral School Governing Board, of 28 July, 2020, which regulates the procedure for obtaining the Industrial Doctorate Mention.

Requirements

 

Students who meet the following requirements shall be eligible for the Industrial Doctorate Mention in their doctoral degree:

  • As established in Art. 15bis of Spanish Royal Decree 99/2011, which regulates official doctoral studies (amended by Spanish Royal Decree 195/2016 of 13 May, by Royal Decree 43/2015 of 2 February and by Royal Decree 534/2013 of 12 July):
    1. The "Industrial Doctorate" mention shall be granted in the following circumstances:
      • a. If there is an employment or commercial contract with the doctoral student. The contract may be concluded by a private or public company, as well as by a public administration.
      • b. If the doctoral student takes part in an industrial research or experimental development project developed in the company or Public Administration in which the service is provided, which shall not be a University. The industrial research or experimental development project in which the doctoral student takes part must be directly related to the thesis they do. This direct relationship shall be proven by means of a statement which shall be endorsed by the University.
    2. In the event that the industrial research or experimental development project is conducted in collaboration with the University and the company or public administration in which the doctoral student serves, a framework collaboration agreement shall be signed by the parties. This agreement shall state the obligations of the University and the company or Public Administration, as well as the selection procedure for doctoral candidates.
    3. The doctoral student shall have a thesis tutor appointed by the University and a supervisor appointed by the company or Public Administration, who may be, if applicable, the thesis supervisor in accordance with the doctoral regulations.
  • Those established, in general, for the admission to the procedure of the doctoral thesis defence in the UCAM Doctoral Studies Regulations.
  • Have been hired by the company through an employment or commercial contract for at least 6 months. Said six months shall be included in the period going from the first enrolment of the doctoral student to the admission for processing the doctoral thesis.

 

Documentation

 

The doctoral student shall apply for the Industrial Doctorate Mention at the time of admission for processing the doctoral thesis. In addition to the documentation required in all cases, the following documentation must be submitted:

  • Application for the certification of the Industrial Doctorate Mention using the official form.
  • A copy of the employment or commercial contract with the contracting company or with a public administration, or the student's employment record, showing the student's relationship with the company for a minimum period of six months, which must be within the period between the student's first enrolment and the submission of the doctoral thesis.
  • Statement or report describing the activities carried out in the research or experimental development project in which the doctoral student has taken part which proves the direct relationship with the developed thesis. This document must be signed by the doctoral student, the supervisor appointed by the company (or public administration), the thesis tutor, the thesis supervisor(s), and the coordinator of the doctoral programme academic committee.

The supervisor appointed by the company shall not be a preliminary assessor nor part of the examining board which evaluates said doctoral thesis, even if they meet the requirements for such functions.
