Sports medicine is the branch of medicine that delves into the study of the physiological and structural aspects associated with athletic activity. The sports medicine department at CIARD-UCAM aims to promote the health of elite athletes and improve their athletic performance, while also advancing research in high-performance sports. At CIARD-UCAM, we distinguish two main objectives regarding sports medicine. Firstly, optimizing performance through the physiological assessment of physical condition in elite athletes will be one of our lines of work. Secondly, CIARD-UCAM also aims to provide advisory services to athletes on injury prevention and common pathologies associated with certain sports disciplines or modalities.
Exercise Physiology Laboratory
The CIARD Exercise Physiology Laboratory is comprised of a team of professionals (a sports medicine physician, a nurse, and a graduate in physical activity and sports science) whose objective is to promote the health of elite athletes and improve their athletic performance, while also delving into areas related to high-performance sports research.
To achieve our objectives, we will conduct sports medical examinations, where the athlete's health status and fitness level (functional assessment) will be evaluated together.
The medical examination will take into account the athlete's personal and family medical history, habits, injuries, illnesses, etc., and will include a thorough cardiovascular, respiratory, and other systemic examinations, as well as a resting electrocardiogram.
The functional assessment will be performed through exercise stress tests (ergometry) in the laboratory or in the field, with respiratory gas analysis and determination of biochemical markers in blood. Through this assessment, we will obtain relevant data that will allow us to optimize training and improve the athlete's competitive performance.
